With the exhibition at Gallery 2, Láníková expands on a body of documentation depicting vulnerability. However, this vulnerability relates not only to health, but also to exhaustion stemming from the social and economic conditions of life in late capitalism—conditions in which only certain individuals and bodies can thrive.
The artist works with a restrained selection of motifs and materials. These motifs include leather offcuts and their outlines, or hands documented during specific activities.
She draws on personal experience, yet approaches it with distance—treating it as an archive organized through selection, variation, and serial work. Another part of this documentation was recently presented at the AVU Gallery in the exhibition Through Vulnerability I Can Draw Closer to Others and in the artist's book Healing (Léčení), published by AVU Publishing.
Kristina Láníková (*1988, Prague) is a conceptual visual artist and poet whose work closely intertwines the realms of visual art and poetry. In her analytical practice, she builds on methods of reduction, seriality, and the appropriation of everyday as well as fragile materials (such as glass, leather offcuts, psychotropic packaging, or adhesive bandages). She has long explored themes of embodiment, vulnerability, illness, and healing processes, examining them from a personal perspective as well as through the lens of social and medical constructs. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague (where she is currently a doctoral candidate) and, alongside her visual art practice, is the author of several distinctive poetry collections.
