On the Edge of Sound

17. 9. – 22. 11. 2025
Gallery 3

Making stone resonate, a poetic idea that Jan Prošek has decided to artistically explore for Gallery 3. When the structure of stone becomes an element of sound impulse, we encounter the resonance of layered solid natural matter. With the exhibition project On the Edge of Sound, the author continues his long-term artistic project exploring the theme of searching for landscape, both as a place of residence and its identification through physical matter.

We do not know all the aspects of the landscape until they have revealed themselves to us. A stone is as much a detail of the landscape as the rustling of leaves or the singing of birds. A fragment of stone represents a regular feature of the landscape, becoming an echo of the lived present while also illustrating the fundamental essence of nature. Sharp edges, rounded hollows, smooth surfaces – traces of processes ranging from erosion to breakage – create a diverse intensity of sound morphology. How will the sonic trace of a stone surface capturing the process of age-old changes sound? Jan Prošek's sound essay is based on the format of descriptive documentation, but it turns into a playful etude that expands the mode of our listening.

Jan Prošek (*1977) focuses in his art on the relationship and feelings of people towards the landscape, which individuals enter for various reasons and needs. The essential elements of his creative work are actions, performative gestures, rituals, or walking, relating to space and human perception of the surrounding environment. He works with processes of perceiving the immediate environment and uses documentary formats for the resulting work, including site-specific installations, drawings, prints, and audiovisual recordings. He studied in the Studio of Performance under Tomáš Ruller at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Technology in Brno (2000–2007), where he gradually began using digital media as a means of documenting his own actions, which are dominated by his own experience or personal experience during the artistic event. He works as an assistant professor in the Studio of Interactive Media at the Faculty of Art and Design at J. E. Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem.
