Shared Houses and the Tenants' and Tenants' Initiative: how to get out of the housing crisis?
Anna Remešová and Marika Volfová
The housing crisis affects us all. Where it comes from, how it affects our everyday lives - and most importantly: how can we respond to it together?
This workshop will introduce two organisations that are working their way out of the housing crisis through solidarity, mutual support and community building. We will present the cooperative housing model of the organization Shared Houses, which represents four cooperative projects in the Czech Republic, and the Racek Cooperative, a community housing cooperative in Děčín, of which we are members. Together we will look at how this model can create a breeding ground for a new approach to housing and neighbourly relations. We will also introduce the Tenants' Initiative, which is also being established in Ústí nad Labem and aims to improve conditions for tenants in the long term.
In the few years of its operation, the initiative has hundreds of members across the country and many successes in defending tenants' rights.
The presentation will be followed by a discussion and experience-sharing workshop. Anyone can come, whether you are concerned about your housing situation, or just want to learn more about what is causing the housing crisis, or are looking for a way to be civically active in your neighborhood.
