Ivana Pegan

4. 12. 2024 – 8. 3. 2025
Gallery 3

The sound composition Mindness, presented in the Gallery 3, gradually swirls our attention. It abstractly explores the emotional state of an individual, we encounter the flow of thought. Ivana Pegan works with language, writing, speech, voice, transforming them into poetic objects, spatial installations, and more.
My mind is racing with thoughts, all tumbling over each other. The composition Mindness (2017) poetically captures the overload of thoughts in its title. The sound composition presented in Gallery 3 gradually swirls our attention. In the artwork, Ivana Pegan works with the captured word and the sound of the voice as tools for archiving emotions. The artist overlays melancholic singing, noises of human presence such as the clinking of glasses, whispered conversations, the dog's barking, where in the middle of all these ambient stimuli, at first gradually, then one over the other, verbally anchored fragments of thoughts are heard. It does not tell a story but offers an opportunity to delve into a person's inner state and explore the fragile boundary between the public and inner worlds through an acoustic collage of fragments. We hear words and sounds, yet at the same time, unspoken thoughts emerge, or the vibrations of the surrounding world become present. We are not merely standing in the face of the situation, but above all, we are acoustically absorbed by it – a situation that encourages us to listen to ourselves and others, to become more perceptive and sensitive to the everyday noise of life.

Ivana Pegan (b. 1971) graduated in 1996 from the Sculpture Department of the Zagreb Academy of Fine Arts, in the class of professor Šime Vulas, and she also does restauration work. Since 2014 she has worked as director of the HDLUDU’s Flora Gallery. In her recent work, Ivana Pegan uses photography, language, writing, speech, and voice, expressing herself through media such as artist books, poetic objects, and as audio and video works. Through journal entries, fragmentary texts, poetry, short stories, and grammatical puzzles, as well as visual and sound works (spoken word), she employs her own voice to explore the ways in which a subject is constituted, focusing on the emotional, mental and vocal potential of transcending social conventions and established boundaries. She lives and works in Dubrovnik since 1998. Ivana Pegan is a member of the Croatian Freelance Artists Association, the Croatian Association of Fine Artists Dubrovnik (HDLUDU), Art Workshop Lazareti Dubrovnik and art organization Tkivo.
