The end of May and the month of June are always dedicated to theses of the Faculty of Art and Design at Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem (FAD). It is an event of high importance for the academic space and its atmosphere as well as for the art scene of the town of Ústí nad Labem. Exhibitions of young artists and designers are very popular, of course; nevertheless, exhibitions of theses have yet another meaning for art schools. First of all, it is a presentation of the works the students want to get a title and finish their studies with, a proof of the school’s quality and background of students. It is also a source of various topics, ideas and problems the young artists and designers deal with, of the methods they choose, their inclinations as well as the skills they have acquired during their studies and can now employ on their own. Being presented in prestigious galleries, these results automatically become part of the whole context of arts and design.

Special presentation

This year’s presentation of the theses focuses on the exposition of various approaches, from free art to design, which has been, among other things, allowed by dividing it between the two spacious galleries of Ústí nad Labem. Both the House of Arts and the Emil Filla Gallery will host two unique exhibitions that will not merely introduce the artefacts gathered but will create visually engaging spaces full of art and design.

Studios, personalities, current topics

The strategies of the contemporary art are represented by objects, installations and experimental projects with photographies and audiovisual media, emerging mainly at the Department of Photography and the Department of Electronic Imagery (for example in the Time-Based Media Studio under Daniel Hanzlík and Pavel Mrkus, in the Performance Studio under Jiří Kovanda, and in the Photography Studio under Lukáš Jasanský). The Department of Visual Communication will introduce the best graphic-design works; the students of this department do not only engage in design, though – the topics of their choice are often related to current issues (ecological, social, and political). The Department of Applied Art and Design will present the works from the following studios: Ceramic Design (under Antonín Tomášek), Glass (under Marcel Mochal), Product Design (under Jan Čapek), Natural Materials (under Robert Vlasák and Jan Krtička), and Fashion and Textile Design (under Jan Löbl). Once again, they will offer interesting and thought-provoking works employing contemporary trends in design, such as sustainability, ecology and recycling. Unique and original solutions of the artistic and visual words will also be part of the works from other studios: Digital Media, Graphic Design I, Graphic Design II, Visual Design, Interior Design, and Applied and Advertising Photography as well as the Photography Studio which offers studies in English.
