The exhibition Gardening of Soul at the House of Arts in Ústí nad Labem is part of a greater program called Gardening of Soul: In Five Chapters, which examines the topic of the garden and gardening from various metaphorical angles. Undertaken at the Faculty of Art and Design at Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem, this multiyear program is divided into several interconnected parts and encompasses the creation of artworks in the public space with involvement from local communities, residencies of foreign artists in the Czech Republic and Czech artists in Iceland, an international conference, and exhibition presentations accompanied by the realization of current works of art.

We stand helplessly amidst the ruins of the industrial era. The persistent emphasis on increasing production, extractionism, and profit appears to be one of the main causes of the current climate crisis. After two centuries of consumptive destruction of the landscape and depletion of natural resources, we have reached a phase where rapid global solutions are necessary. The dialectic of gradual decay, radical destruction of power structures, and subsequent transformation is, in the Western Hegelian historical tradition, a variable that facilitates orientation in time.

art of presumption – Natálie Pleváková

The sound installation art of presumption plays with the scale of sensitivity to the perception of the sound environment. It is based on an objectively given fact – sound is, for most of us, a fundamental element of the construction of reality. The Czech title of the work itself is a play on the place reflected and its official designation. In her composition, using sounds at the Ústí nad Labem House of Arts, Natálie Pleváková detects places, accentuates objects and materials, and transfers frequencies outside the audible spectrum into perceptible sensations.
Natálie Pleváková is a composer and sound artist. She studied Multimedia Composition at the Janáček Academy of Performing Arts in Brno, and Interactive Media Theory at the Institute of Musicology at Masaryk University in Brno. In her work she seeks a way out of the temporal determination of music and fragmented musical perception. Balancing on the edge of apparent chaos and precise composition, she invites audiences to discover new aesthetic categories in music and to increase listening sensitivity.
